Wine Tasting 101
Do you suffer from winetaste-ophobia? Anxious because you think you never quite know something intelligent to say about the wine you're sampling? Trembling hands and sweaty palms as you proffer your glass forward to receive your taste?
Fear not! Whether your next wine tasting is at the Boston Wine Expo or D&L's weekend wine tasting, check out these simple, time-tested wine tasting tips and you'll be sipping and swirling and asking for the next tasting pour with unabashed confidence!
Take a moment to look at the color & clarity of what's in your glass. This is nothing more than noting if the wine, depending on whether its red or white, has really dark inky characteristics, lighter see-through colors, or tawny, aged colors. For example, young whites will be water-clear to yellow to gold in color versus an aged white that may show more caramel hues. Reds are typically categorized as red, ruby, or purple with a notation of light to dark. Aged reds can show a brownish hue at the edges of the wine in your glass when you tip it slightly - these edges are technically referred to as the meniscus. I'll try to keep the technical jargon to a minimum.
This is my favorite part of wine tasting - ok 2nd favorite part about wine tasting - because the aromas that you smell are just what YOU smell. Sure you can be swayed and think you smell saddle leather, cigar box, and pencil lead, BUT only you know what you are smelling! I've heard more than one person say they can't put words around the aromas, but that's ok.
Ensure you have a good grip on the glass either by the stem or by the globe, and give the contents a good swirl and then quickly put your nose in there. The aromas are volatile, meaning they will become quickly airborne when the wine is agitated, but then they evaporate until agitated again. Aromas can be broadly grouped - ripe fruits, earthy notes, barnyard-esque descriptions, vegetables, cooking spices, or oak-barrel toasted ranges. I remember saying something one time at a tasting that just hung in the air and earned me a snarling glare from the pourer at a crowded wine tasting. It happens to the best of us...a slightly traumatic moment for me, but I think everyone else quickly forgot about it. And I learned that a common Sauvignon Blanc aroma that I announced as "cat pee" is really what the wine world refers to as a "feral aroma". Who knew??
Sip & Swirl This is my favorite part!
Simply put, you're not doing body shots here - don't shoot back the wine pour and slam your glass down. This doesn't mean you need to gargle with it either. Use common sense - you know that thing you came into the tasting with that fades as the tasting pours increase?
You basically have the option of swallowing your wine or spitting it out, but either way you will want to swish and swirl the wine around in your mouth. You can also aerate the wine in your mouth by sucking in air with the wine in the front of your mouth. The first time I saw that I thought the guy I was with was either choking or had too much to drink, but I soon realized its a great way to really open up the flavors in big reds. NOTE: If you want to spit please make sure you know where and what the designated spittoon is and try to position yourself near it. This is for your own good. Spitting doesn't involve spraying your wine tasting brethren, nor dribbling wine down your sweater - both embarrassing events. You really want to make sure you'll have access to it if you want to remain more sober as the tastes multiply. Truly a personal choice....
Remember, wine tasting is fun and explorative - and quite tasty! Bring your friends and enjoy what the ancient Greeks devoted gods to - WINE!
Cheers,
Barbara | |
